How do i get started doing EDI with U. S. Steel?
The easiest way to get started is to request a kick off meeting with the EDI team at U. S. Steel. You can do that by filling out our simple Contact Us form.
What is EDI?
Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) is the computer-to-computer exchange of business data in standard formats. In EDI, information is organized according to a specified format set by both parties, allowing a "hands-off" computer transaction that requires no human intervention or rekeying on either end. All information contained in an EDI transaction set is, for the most part, the same as on a conventionally printed document.
Organizations have adopted EDI for the same reasons they have embraced much of today's modern technology-enhanced efficiency and increased profits.
The EDI standards are developed and maintained by the Accredited Standards Committee (ASC) X12. The standards are designed to work across industry and company boundaries. Changes and updates to the standards are made by consensus, reflecting the needs of the entire base of standards users, rather than those of a single organization or business sector. Today, more than 300,000 organizations use the 300+ EDI transaction sets to conduct business
What does it take to do EDI?
Standard Language: The electronic information exchange requires a standardized language, shared by sender and receiver to structure the messages. There are different standards such as EDIFACT, X12, XML
EDI Software: Sender and receiver must have an EDI solution with which to build and manage messages, according to the standard which will facilitate the exchanges.
Network communication: EDI exchanges require secure communications systems adapted to the peculiarities of this type of transaction. There are options, although the most widespread are the VAN or Value Added Networks. These private communication networks have high levels of security, as well as control and monitoring to ensure the correct transmission and reception of different messages
How would we send you a test?
We have both a QA and production environments available. You will find the appropriate host listed in the technical documentation you were provided. Please advise us when you send the test file so we can verify receipt. Our preference is you send test file to our test environment. If you can't send to our test environment (for example; if you are using a VAN); by using the Test IDs defined above it will error out in our production system as a test. If you have any questions please contact edi_helpdesk@uss.com .
What are your EDI IDs?
Our EDI IDs are 01:029990699/029990699 for Production and 01:029990699T/029990699 for Test
What documents can i exchange via EDI ?
Almost all transactions that take place between two parties by conventional means can be made via EDI.
The most commonly exchanged are orders, invoices, shipping notices, invoices, inventory reports, etc..
What is VAN?
A VAN (value added network) is a private network provider that focuses on offering network services such as secure email, message encryption and management reporting. Their goal is to facilitate EDI (electronic data interchange) among online companies, providing a convenient way for ecommerce businesses to securely communicate and share data.
